I stream, You stream, We all scream for Livestream!

Today we discussed twoperiscope meerkat logo streaming apps on the rise: Meerkat and Periscope. Streaming apps allow you to broadcast video to the web instantly. They turn you into a live-on-the-scene reporter similar to what you see on TV. In both cases, both apps post links to your Twitter feed that allow people to join and comment.

Thanks to all who participated in our MC409 MMR first livestream using the Meerkat app. Now everybody in the “livestream” pool!

Your assignment is to do a livestream with either Meerkat or Periscope during Mass Communications Day and write a blog post about your experience. So how did it go???

  1. Mass Comm Day at Jackson State was a success today once again. It was located at the ecenter from 8 am to 1pm. They had a number of thing going on between those hours from breakfast, panels, Google glasses, lunch, App breaks and the awards. This event was to show upcoming mass comm students that they can get a job in their field, they have to just “hustle”. That it is not going to be easy to get the job, so you have to be ready to work hard. The panel just told their experiences and answered questions the audience asked.

I came to this event because I am a mass comm major, with a concentration of multimedia journalism. I also came to this event because it gave me the opportunity and my counterparts the opportunity to meet individuals who once were in a position but did something different to get to that point in their career. The assignment we had to do is download the app, Meerkat or Periscope and do a live tweet stream within Mass Comm Day. I decided to use Meerkat. It was a little bit of technical problems at first. The problem I had was trying to make sure it was actually streaming and fully understanding the app within one night. So I had to play with the options a bit before I made the official live stream itself, which I end up doing two.

With this assignment, I did not have any interactions with the surrounding people. The first live stream I did was just part of one of the guest speakers speech and no one was watching it. With the second live stream, I caught one live viewer and I spoke more on that. If I could change what I did, I probably would have done the video in selfie position, therefore getting me and the crowd in at the same time. It probably would have made them interact more, too.

I can see myself using this app going to tell any and all kinds of stories. It is so convenient for hard or soft news, sports, and entertainment to easily get attention. Live stream is the future.

At the end of the day, LiveStream will always be better suited for dramatic events. The reason behind this response is dramatic events keep you on toes, will be intense and suspenseful! You will keep the viewers attention. They might even subscribe so they won’t ever miss a live stream again!

I really enjoyed the event and appreciate those who took the time to come speak with us !

  2. For Mass Comm day 2015, the students faculty and alumni of JSU’s mas communications department gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of students and to also explore the many facets of the mass media industry.

The event kicked off with alumni guest speaker, former Miss Jackson State and PR pro and CEO and founder of InGENEus Public Relations & Co, Ronnika Joyner.

Joyner gave a presentation on how she stared her business in PR, giving aspiring media students advice and career tips.

The event continued with “Gadgets, Apps and Streaming, Oh my!

In the media industry technology is constantly evolving creating new ways for mass communication professionals to communicate with the public.

One of these new gadgets was Google Glass which is a type of wearable technology with an optical head mounted display.

Developed by Google with the mission of producing a mass-market computer. Google Glass displays information in smartphone like hands-free format. Wearers communicate with the Internet with language voice commands.

Another new facet of media are the apps Meerkat and Livestream. These app s are live streaming video platforms that allows users to view and broadcast video content using a camera and a computer through the internet.

I used the Livestream app to live tweet from the event. This allowed to show my followers on Twitter live footage of the industry panelist during the event. My experience with Livestream was ok but definitely not anything special. It took me several tries to get the app to work and connect to twitter. I do think the app would be useful for live reporting from events and breaking news. The best thing about to being able to broadcast live is you can interact with viewers while you are recording and they are seeing everything as it happens. I think this would be good for reporting dramatic events or unique experiences you may want to share with followers like going skydiving or para sailing because it can give them an inside look for a life-like experience.

  3. First Meerkat Experience

So today was my first time using the live streaming app MeerKat. I gave a miniature tour of the firSt floor of the student center, as well as the book store. Inside the book store I interviewed two students who were shopping. My live stream wasn’t a hard core news story but more of a feature if anything. I really enjoyed it.

It’s very simple and easy to use. Live streaming is definitely changing the way news can be reported. The only two difficulties that I can across was when I first started my video I wanted the camera to face me and not my setting. The other one was for some reason towards the end of my broadcast the video part went out and there was only audio. I don’t know why this happened but if I had to take a guess I would say the wifi connection went out of was bad. I think it’s good that it went to audio instead of completely shutting down the broadcast.

While I was doing my live stream, people were were commenting and liking it, and it allowed me to view what they were saying as they were saying it. I even gave a lil shout out to one of the people who commented on my live stream.

I think that using Meerkat was a great experience. It’s a testimony on how ways to get and display news are constantly evolving. It’s important that as journalist we stay up to date with these changes and are able to use them effectively.

At the bottom I am posting the link to my live stream through my Twitter account. Oh yeah I failed to mention that the live stream connects automatically to your Twitter account, so all your Twitter followers can see the live stream without having the MeerKat app.

  4. Experiencing Mass Communication day was great. As I walked in I saw students professionals dressed and ready to network. I didn’t get a chance to network but I had a chance to look around. I was more focused on how well everyone interacted. The atmosphere felt welcoming.

Even though I didn’t get a chance use Meerkat, I was deeply connected by watching the interaction between the students and professionals.
There were no technical difficulties. I even sat and watched a couple lectures.

Meerkat is great for exposing yourself, promoting yourself and also getting your name out to a more widespread audience. So think that Meerkat can also be great for public speaking, simply because you have to pretty much narrate what’s going on, as well as getting the viewers to be involved. So I think this would tune up students speaking skills as well as presentation skills.

  6. I always look at CNN the minute I wake up. CNN did a five minute interview on the app MeerKat. Its creators attend the University of Texas at Austin, and their app has taken off. I decided to do a live stream of TigerFest. It is one of the biggest events that is held at JSU during the spring semester. MeerKat was a great way to actually stream to my followers on Twitter.

When streaming it seemed like I was just recording on my Iphone. It was simple and effective. In my video you can really see fans of JSU at the annual Blue and White spring game. I really did not have any technical issues while streaming. I personally feel that the app needs to grow. It seemed so basic while I was streaming, but I am aware that this is new and like ever app it takes time to perfect.

I think that this app should be used more in classrooms, and I love the fact that Dr. Fridge really was able to allow us to use this. It was so innovative and refreshing knowing that we could use this.

I could see myself using MeerKat in the field. It is a great way to really get what actually is going on out in the public!
